Statement on the revision of the East Riding of Yorkshire CCG Minor Ailments Service

July 14, 2016

Last week, we issued a briefing on the revisions to the Minor Ailments Service in NHS East Riding of Yorkshire CCG.  After feedback we have re-formatted that briefing so it is easier to read.  We have also clarified the LPC’s position as to whether contractors should accept the revised scheme.  The LPC’s recommendation is below:

“The revised scheme – ‘Pharmacy First’ was discussed at our 6th July 2016 LPC Meeting. The LPC members remain gravely concerned about the changes to the scheme and the impact it will have on Community Pharmacies being able to deliver the revised service, patients’ access to timely treatment and support and the potential increase in work load for primary care or urgent care services.

The LPC remains committed to support patients in accessing high quality care from the Community Pharmacy network.  In our Vision for Community Pharmacy, we said that Community Pharmacy should be the ‘first port of call’ for patients accessing NHS services, especially for self-limiting conditions.  A Community Pharmacy triage service would release significant capacity in General Practice and allow our GP colleagues to support the CCG in achieving their priorities.

However, this can only be realised if there is investment in the Community Pharmacy network and its services.  After taking feedback from contractors and extensive deliberation by the Committee, the LPC has regretfully decided that it cannot support the revisions to the service and recommends that contractors do not sign up to provide the revised service.

The LPC is disappointed with this outcome and will continue to work with all stakeholders and commissioners to develop Community Pharmacy services.”
