Brexit Update

January 16, 2019

A series of measures and guidance materials that have been issued in the past week as part of the Department of Health and Social Care’s (DHSC) work to ramp up preparations for a possible no-deal Brexit. PSNC has gathered together all the latest information and advice for pharmacy teams below.

Contingency planning
Pharmacy teams will be aware that on 15th January 2019, MPs rejected the Prime Minister’s proposed Brexit deal meaning a no-deal Brexit scenario is still a possibility. PSNC is continuing to work with DHSC to safeguard the supply of medicines to pharmacies and their patients, whatever the outcome of the ongoing political debate about Brexit.

Serious Shortage Protocols
Draft legislation on Serious Shortage Protocols has been laid before Parliament and should come into force in early February 2019. The protocols, for use in the event of a serious shortage of a medicine, may give community pharmacies the ability to dispense less, give a different strength or pharmaceutical form or provide an alternative product.

NHS England advice
Dr Keith Ridge, NHS England’s Chief Pharmaceutical Officer, wrote to community pharmacies to update them on the Government’s contingency preparations. The letter reiterates that it is ‘not helpful or appropriate for anyone to be stockpiling medicines locally’.
