Accessible Information Standard

Accessible Information Standard

June 30, 2016

From the 31st of July 2016, the Accessible Information Standard requirements of the Health and Social Care Act 2012 come in to force.

An e-learning pack is available on the CPPE website to  support pharmacists, technicians and pre-registration pharmacists to improve the understanding and skills of community pharmacy teams in implementing the Accessible Information Standard to support people with communication difficulties:  https://www.cppe.ac.uk/programmes/l/ais-e-01/

In terms of services delivered through the PharmOutcomes platform the following changes will  be implemented in time for the new legalisation start date of 31.7.16:

  • If you record any person’s name on a record on PharmOutcomes, you have to record if they have a requirement for accessible information. Therefore if you use a template where patient names are recorded, you will notice that a new question will appear asking if your patient has an Accessible Information need.
  • If there are none, then select “No” and carry on with the form.
  • If there are AIS needs, select “Yes” and then use the box that appears to search for the relevant AIS need which are defined by NHS England. By typing in the first few letters, the lists will appear. You can add or remove any number of needs as appropriate.
  • When the provision is saved, the identified need is also recorded against the patient record.

Platform adjustments will be completed over the next month and all templates requiring the insertion of AIS will be fully compliant with the law before the end of July.
